Choosing a Pushchair

Oh my word. Where to begin? We are clearly going to need a travel system for the baby when it arrives, but who knew there were so many features and so many different models? The options seem to be endless!

I’ve asked around for some advice but to be honest I’m feeling even more overwhelmed. It’s been suggested I focus on our own needs and how to best address them but given that this is our first baby I’m not really sure what our needs are!

Anyway, these are some of the features people have suggested are important/should be considered:

  • Good wheels – what makes a good wheel depends on the type of terrain you’re planning to roll over (who knew?!)
  • Ability to both forward and parent face
  • Does it recline fully?
  • A decent size basket
  • Avoid foam handlebars – apparently they soak up the rain!
  • Does it fold in one motion?
  • Will it fit in the boot of the car? (Pretty essential this one!)
  • Three wheels are apparently easier to manouvre but four wheels have a bigger basket
  • How easy is it to store?

Then there’s the whole other consideration as to whether it’s compatible with the car seat… and of course it has to look nice too! I think we might have to take a trip somewhere massive so we can test some out!

What’s your advice on which type of travel system to use? Have you had a dream pushchair you could recommend? Please let me know, I think we need all the help we can get!!

I completely relate to the minefield of choice that choosing a pram brings! We looked at a lot of different options and found one thing that sometimes stood in our way was cost! Some of the better rated travel systems were just out of our price range e.g the UPPAbaby Vista. We settled on putting a deposit down (this is so we secured the sale price but left the account open incase it drops in price before the end of April and we’ll have that deducted from our final bill!) on the Mamas and Papas Armadillo Flip XT in the end. I hadn’t heard of it before and don’t know anyone who has it but it’s got great features and came as a package with a whole travel system, including isofix base. It has leatherette handles, a large basket, folds really small with a one handed click and twist system, can be rear or parent facing and fold in either direction (usually you have to have the seat in rear facing mode only to fold), stands when folded, has a huge UV protected canopy that would cover baby if sleeping, can be used from birth (however we got the carry cot in our package too), has all terrain wheels and looks lovely too. The only downside I could see is that the car seat that comes with it is slightly heavier than some others. All the reviews I’ve read and watched look great. Hope you manage to find something you are happy with. Too much choice for mums to be!

Thanks Becky, your choice sounds fab! I will have to check it out. We don’t have a mamas and papas locally but I think we might have to travel to make sure we get the right one x

Haven’t used them personally as we didn’t have a new pushchair this time round, but I have heard that john lewis staff are very helpful when it comes to choosing…so may be worth a look in there x

Thanks Kel, we did have a look at the weekend and the lady in store was lovely! They had quite a small selection in our local one though so I think we’ll look elsewhere too x
