When you feel like you don’t know what you’re doing…

I know, I think parenting in general feels like you don’t know what you’re doing, but this weaning business has really got me in a spin. I know I wrote about the minefield that is weaning before Christmas but I feel like my anxiety around the subject has grown over the holidays.

I find myself worrying constantly – is she eating enough? Should I be feeding her this? There was a bit of debate from my parents as to whether I should have fed Little M smoked mackerel, which didn’t help the questioning of myself either! It’s bad enough when I’m doing it to myself, without anyone else joining in!

FYI, I’ve  found this NHS page which is very clear about foods to avoid when weaning. A bit of smoked mackerel won’t hurt although there are varying opinions out there on the web, much like there are about anything really. I’m satisfied that the NHS are a sufficient authority on such matters. I’m considering printing this page out and sticking it to my fridge! Also, why on earth would anyone think it a good idea to feed their weaning baby raw jelly cubes?! It must be quite common else they wouldn’t feel the need to mention it…

Little M doesn’t seem to eat a great deal when we do feed her solids and she also doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to drink any less milk – I’m still expressing (seven months, go me!) so this has come as something of a disappointment… I’ve tried giving her milk before eating (that usually ends in disaster though as if she gags on something the whole lot comes up; joy!) or withholding milk until after a meal but that doesn’t seem to encourage her to eat any more.

The whole not coping with lumps in food is worrying me, too. She’ll chow down quite happily on a piece of toast but a lump of mashed parsnip causes a vomiting incident… I mean yes, half of the toast ends up on the floor but I know she’s chewing and swallowing at least some of it.

I’m thinking about giving my health visitor a call next week as I think I need some reassurance that I’m doing the right thing, and some guidance on portion sizes. I’ve got no clue as to how much Little M should be eating at seven months.

There are some positives, though. Little M is enjoying a piece of toast and will independently pick up a piece, chew and swallow. She loves a bit of fruit. She’s also getting quite proficient at using her Nuby 360 sippy cup, although she sometimes needs a bit of help to tip it up far enough to get some water.

Are there any books or apps I could look at to give me an idea of whether I’m on the right track? Any suggestions much appreciated!

    Try not to worry. It sounds like M is doing really well trying different bits. Weaning is jury trial and error and it’s just a case of trying things again and again. Apparently it’s at least 10 times before you can know if they truely like something or not!
    I’ve found a great app with recipes and tips for feeding schedules. It’s called Baby Led Weaning Recipes. They have an IG page too – babyledweaningcookbook. The Ella’s Kitchen purple book is great for starting out too as gives good guidance on portion sizes.
    I’ve found some days Little wants to eat loads and others she’s really not fussed. Does your area not do weaning classes? The HVs here offer weaning classes that mums can go to to find out more and get some guidance? Though a 1:1 visit might be more useful for you as you can find out more specific to you guys.

      Thank you, I’ll check those things out. My HV did say to call her if I wanted weaning advice, so I think I’ll take her up on it.

    I’m on my third time round with this weaning malarkey and still feel worried half the time! Try not too stress too much she sounds like she’s doing great. Remember ‘food before one is just for fun’ So don’t worry too much about quantities it’s more important she’s exploring tastes and textures and new flavours, which it sounds like she’s totally doing! Great blog BTW.

      Thank you! She’s quite good at trying new things so that’s good, but she’s putting away so much milk I worry that she’s not eating enough.

        She will take what she needs. Trust her little instincts she knows. I have a little 7 month old milk machine as well!

    I rememeber this stage and the worrying with my first and then second time round I was much more relaxed. Try not to worry, I know easier said than done! I can’ t believe about the jelly cubes though! #MarvMondays

    I’m a worrier too; my daughter is 2 now and I still never know if I’m doing the right thing, but then I hate it when people interfere haha. It sounds to me like you are doing a fab job, keep going and trust your instincts, and that of your baby too. X

    You poor thing – sounds like you’re having a very stressful time. But don’t worry, you’re doing great! Your LO is only 7 months so there is plenty of time to for your little one to get used to it. My daughter still guzzles milk and she’s almost 2 (cow’s milk now) and just slowly started eating more. At 7 months we were on finely mashed food and very soft flaked fish so it sounds like you’re at about the same stage. Children learn at their own pace so just keep offering bits and bobs in different forms and your daughter will learn.

    Does your local children’s centre run a baby choking and resuscitation course? I did one and that really made me feel more comfortable in giving new things to my daughter. I’ve never ever had to use it but it’s a nice back-up.

    Also, def stick the NHS list on the fridge and ignore everyone else. Grandparents mean well but advice changes and they will have experience from a different time!

      Thank you. I’m already first aid trained and have watched some videos specifically on infant resuscitation as a refresher 🙂

    Hi lovely, I found Annabel Karmel’s baby weaning recipe book really helpful the first time round. It made it all so easy with the recipes, what food to give and what not to give and portions size, frequency etc. Our first took to weaning really well, but im really struggling with our second who doesnt seem hugely interested and hasnt really mastered the art of moving food around in his mouth properly. We’ve had many vomiting incidents and its really thrown me so I can really relate to what youve experienced, even as a second time mum! Thanks for linking this up to #MarvMondays. Emily
