Welcome back to Pondering Playtime, my fortnightly series where I share a favourite picture book and a craft or play activity to go with it. This week, I’ve chosen Hairy Maclary: Scattercat by Lynley Dodd*. Here’s my Hairy Maclary paper plate craft activity to go with it.
Hairy Maclary: Scattercat – What’s the Story?
Hairy Maclary: Scattercat is another book in the well-know Hairy Maclary series by Lynley Dodd. In this story, Hairy Maclary runs around the neighbourhood, scaring all of the cats away from their sleeping places. That is, until he meets Scarface Claw…
Hairy Maclary – Hairy Maclary Paper Plate Craft Activity
M is really into watching Mister Maker at the moment, so I wanted to do more of a crafting activity with her. Paper plates are ideal because they are cheap to buy and there are so many things that you can do with them! For this activity, I pre-drew Hairy Maclary’s eyes, nose and mouth for M, then gave her his ears, collar and fur (wool) to stick on herself. I created my own version of Hairy Maclary alongside M, so that she could get the idea and copy what I was doing. This meant that I wasn’t ‘interfering’ with her plate, so it was all her own work.
You will need:
- Paper plate
- Black and red marker pens
- Black wool
- PVA glue
- Black, red and blue card

Hairy Maclary – What M thought
M is a fan of the Hairy Maclary books, but she particularly enjoyed Hairy Maclary: Scattercat as she’s a cat lover. She started to predict that the cats would run away, and found it hilarious when Hairy Maclary encountered Scarface Claw at the end.
As for the paper plate craft, M declared that we were making, “like Mister Maker,” and has been proudly showing off her paper plate saying, “I made Hairy Maclary. It’s fantastic!” Therefore, I’m declaring this activity a success! Admittedly, her Hairy Maclary isn’t quite an exact replica of the original, but she had fun (especially with the glue) and it didn’t cost much at all to make.
