On Saturday, we had a little gathering to celebrate Little M’s first birthday. It was lovely having the grandparents and some of her little friends to come and play in the garden.
We didn’t want to have to worry about feeding anyone other than cake, so we arranged the party for 3pm. I’d highly recommend this as a strategy as it took the pressure off massively, and we only needed to provide drinks.
Originally, we’d planned to have the gathering at the park, to completely eliminate the need to clean the house (yes I am that lazy!), but two days before we heard that a fairground had arrived at our local park, so we decided to relocate to our garden in an attempt to avoid parking carnage! Saturdays at the park are pretty busy anyway, without the addition of a fairground!
Despite the fact that hubby and I then had to spend an entire day cleaning the communal areas of our home, I’m really pleased that we opted for our back garden instead. It made for a far more relaxed environment and, even though our garden is a little on the small side, we all fitted in!
Unfortunately, the lack of space meant that I didn’t quite have room for everything that I had planned (I had visions of a bunting-festooned teepee) but we still made a little effort and hung some of the bunting that our lovely friend Lucy had made for our wedding on the garage wall and fence (unfortunately the wind put paid to the bunting on the fence, but the wall bunting held strong – in fact, it’s still there!).
We also decorated with some lovely decorations and chevron tableware that Party Pieces kindly sent us from their first birthday parties selection. I’ve mentioned before that a giant one-shaped balloon and a homemade birthday cake are pretty much my parenting goals as far as birthdays for Little M go, so I’m mega grateful to Party Pieces for helping me to achieve that. The bits and bobs that they sent really helped to give our home more of a party feel (and I’m obsessed with chevrons, so even better!).
After a good hour or so of the babies playing together and generally having a jolly good time, we sang happy birthday and I helped Little M to blow out her candle, and we all enjoyed a nice slice of birthday cake. Everyone said how good it tasted, which I must admit made me glow with pride just a little bit!
Then that was it! We were left to tidy up the toys and open the presents. We were so touched by all of the lovely gifts that Little M received. She’s got more toys than she knows what to do with now!
I can’t believe how quickly Little M’s birthday has come around. I had been worrying about how to celebrate as I hate the pressure of feeling that whatever I organise has to be a success, and actually our relaxed little party was just the ticket and our guests have said what a nice time they had. Perfect.
Disclosure: We were sent the decorations for Little M’s party free of charge. However, all opinions are my own.
